A Look Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're about to watch. They see the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to deliver that experience—or what it takes when it's time to retire decades of hardware and open the door for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the chance to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). Together, we supported the removal of legacy projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your typical commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Jobs like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work exciting.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the best elements of commercial moving is the diversity.
During one week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're transporting physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we are inside a movie theater, methodically dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it involved removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the standard in the industry.
For movie lovers, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Careful Planning
Moves like this don't start when the moving truck arrives.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Collaborating with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the biggest benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who share the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By combining Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to complete the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't built with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, constricted doorways, and limited access. A few buildings have elevators, whereas others don't. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply putting them on a dolly and heading for the truck.
Every challenge needs to be anticipated before work even begins.
That's where experience makes all the difference.
It's Truly About More Than Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is purely about brute strength.
The truth is that commercial moving is about preparation and planning, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Jobs like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and skilled crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through confined spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and safely loaded for transport.
Most of these systems are not only heavy—they're also highly delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition could cause significant damage.
Patience and communication are no less important than physical strength.
Protecting the Building Is Equally Important
While our focus is on safely relocating equipment, we're equally committed to preserving the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a significant investment, and even minor repairs can prove expensive and disruptive.
When a move is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Big commercial moving projects are not a solo undertaking.
Every member of the crew has a role, and communication is critical from start to finish.
One team member may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another crew member is prepping the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work as a team, there is a rhythm that emerges. That's something that can't be taught overnight.
Observing our crew work together was a clear example of what happens when veteran movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters absolutely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist sneaking downstairs for some movie snacks in between jobs on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
These moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also enjoy what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Just Transportation
Many people believe moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is so much more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees across a single weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment moved without disruption.
Certain projects happen overnight to limit downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every relocation requires flexibility, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Real Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly supported Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've come to understand that successful projects consistently come down to the same basics:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll show up prepared, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and solve problems rather than create them.
No matter if we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach stays the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Part of Movie History
Among the surprising highlights of this project was discovering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once gave life to countless films.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company gets to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it was an experience that we'll never forget.
